The Randall’s Island Park Alliance is opening the Little Hell Gate Salt Marsh for a free drop-in exploration this Saturday, Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon — no registration, just show up. The marsh pathway gates on the boardwalk will be open and members of RIPA’s Natural Areas Team will be on site to answer questions, share facts, and point out the plants and animals that live in one of the city’s last remaining tidal salt marshes. It’s a vital little ecosystem: it buffers the island from flooding and erosion and provides habitat for a range of species, and the rangers make it accessible to kids and adults alike. NYC Parks is throwing a free, family-friendly silent disco in Alley Pond Park this Friday, Aug. 7, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pink BBQ Area near Springfield Boulevard and 76th Avenue in Queens. There are two 30-minute sets (7:30–8:00 and 8:00–8:30), and you don’t need your own gear — bring a photo ID to borrow headphones on site, though supplies are limited. The event is open to the first 50 people on a first-come, first-served basis, costs nothing, and requires no registration; the location is accessible. In 1808, engineer John Randel Jr. planted metal bolts at nearly 1,000 proposed intersections across New York City — the physical markers that created Manhattan’s grid. In 2004, surveyors discovered one of those bolts in Central Park, the only authentic early-19th-century Randel bolt known in the park. The catch: nobody will tell you where it is. The Central Park Conservancy and the parks department keep the location secret for fear someone will steal or damage it, and the West Side Rag — which broke the story — explicitly asked readers not to reveal it in comments, instead issuing a challenge: spend the day traversing the 900-acre park searching for the historic artifact. Gothamist’s James Ramsay took the bait, spent two sweaty hours combing the west side with only a close-up photo, and came up empty — but as he writes, that’s sort of the point: New York isn’t a museum of itself, and the city rewards you with a million things to appreciate if you let it. Spike Lee is teaming up with the Brooklyn Academy of Music, producer Nicholas Ma, and Clara Wu Tsai to launch “Playback: The Brooklyn Watch Party,” a new two-day festival taking over BAM on November 6 and 7.
