BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! is dedicating an entire afternoon to Aaliyah today, Saturday August 8, with “Aaliyah: One in a Million” at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park — completely free, doors at 3pm. The 15th Annual NoMad Jazz Festival wraps up today (Saturday, Aug 8) with a full day of free world-class jazz in Madison Square Park — and it’s the best $0 you’ll spend all summer. The 36th Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival is underway this weekend (August 8–9) at Flushing Meadows Corona Park — New York’s largest multicultural festival and one of the biggest dragon boat events in the country. Teams of up to 20 paddlers, led by a drummer and guided by a steersperson, race in colorfully decorated teak and fiberglass boats across Meadow Lake, their hand-painted dragon heads and tails making them look like works of art skimming the water. Shape Up NYC — a city parks department program that’s been running for two decades — offers nearly 100 free fitness classes across all five boroughs, and they’re surprisingly good. Gothamist reporter Caroline Lewis took four classes in four boroughs in three days to put them to the test: Hip House Cardio in Flatbush, Total Body Bootcamp in a Bronx health department basement, SharQui (belly dance) in Washington Heights, and IntenSati (dance-meets-kickboxing-meets-yoga with shouted affirmations) in Forest Park, Queens. She came away sore but impressed. The classes are held in NYC Parks recreation centers and outdoor spaces, taught by instructors who complete a 12-week training program. Some sessions build real communities — regulars at the belly dance class call themselves the Butterfly Sisterhood and do charity events together. Through Sept. 7, Sotheby’s Breuer Building on Madison Avenue is hosting “Botero in New York,” a free exhibition in partnership with the Fernando Botero Foundation that gathers 25 paintings and sculptures from the artist’s foundational New York period (1960–1973) — many drawn directly from the Botero family and other private collections, and never before shown publicly in the city.
