Most big New York events are things you watch. The Village Halloween Parade is one of the few you can join — no ticket, no lottery, no registration, just a costume and a willingness to stand in a crowd on Canal Street for a while. This year’s theme is “Body & Soul,” and the parade turns 53 on Saturday, Oct. 31.
- When: Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026. Steps off at 7 p.m., rain or shine, runs until roughly 11 p.m.
- Route: starts at Canal Street, north up Sixth Avenue to 15th Street
- To march: anyone in costume can join free. Enter the lineup at Canal Street and Sixth Avenue between 6:30 and 9 p.m.
- Costume is required to march: spectators in street clothes cannot enter the route
- Expect to wait: organizers release marchers in timed groups, so meet your people before you reach the lineup
- To watch: free along Sixth Avenue between King Street and West 15th Street. The Bleecker-to-14th Street stretch is the most crowded
- From home: Spectrum News NY1 airs it live starting at 8 p.m.
- If you want to travel light: the official site sells VIP and skip-the-line passes, but they are optional extras, not a fee on the parade itself
The theme, per artistic director Jeanne Fleming, is about the connection between our bodies and whatever we carry around inside them — she points out that even the skeletons leading the procession need bones to dance up Sixth Avenue. In practice that means anatomical costumes, supernatural looks, dance-floor divas, or bringing someone who has died back to life through costume and performance. (The Time Warp and Dolly are both explicitly on the table.)
The puppets are doing their own version: the Processional Arts Workshop is building luminous spirits and dancing skeletons inspired by the Day of the Dead, joining more than 50 bands and dancers. The parade is also being led this year by a new “Firehorse” puppet commissioned by puppeteer Basil Twist.
Free, walk-up, participatory, and happening on a Saturday night. Pick a side of Sixth Avenue before 7 p.m. — or put on the costume and get in line at Canal.
