It’s My Park is the citywide volunteer program run by Partnerships for Parks, a joint operation of NYC Parks and the City Parks Foundation, and its fall calendar is currently 46 listings long, running from Sept. 21 through Dec. 12. Walk-ons are welcome, the work is supervised, and every single listing is free.

The dates worth blocking off

  • Sat., Sept. 26 — the seasonal Fall It’s My Park Day, five sites at once: Northerleigh Park, Staten Island (9 a.m.–12 p.m.); Brookville Park, Queens (10 a.m.–1 p.m., cleanup plus bench painting, a Little Free Library ribbon-cutting and a “Meet the Author”); Owl’s Head Park, Brooklyn (10 a.m.–12 p.m., planting bulbs and mulching); Walter Gladwin Park, Bronx (10 a.m.–1 p.m., cleanup and leaf raking, accessible); and Community Work Day at the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum, Brooklyn (11 a.m.–1 p.m.).
  • Sun., Sept. 27, 9:30–11:30 a.m. — Marine Park, Brooklyn, with the Marine Park Alliance. Repeats Oct. 3.
  • Sun., Sept. 27, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. — Rainbow Playground, Brooklyn, with the Better Brooklyn Association.
  • Tue., Sept. 29, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. — Ralph Bunche Park, Manhattan, with the Friends of Ralph Bunche Park: cleanup, weeding and watering.
  • Thursdays, 9 a.m.–12 p.m. — Trail Work Thursdays in Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx, from the VCPA Learning Garden. Next dates: Sept. 24, Oct. 1, Oct. 8.
  • Sat., Oct. 3, 9 a.m.–12 p.m. — Wolfe’s Pond Park, Staten Island, with NYCMTB: build, maintain and ride the mountain-bike trails. Repeats the first Saturday of every month.
  • Thu., Sept. 24, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. — Hunter’s Point South Park, Queens, with the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy. Accessible location.

How it works

  • Free, no sign-up, no experience, walk-ons welcome — the listing says so directly.
  • Host groups run each project and hand out the work; the event pages carry the group’s contact if you want to ask what to bring. Wear clothes you can get dirty and closed-toe shoes.
  • If you’re bringing 10 or more people, Partnerships for Parks asks you to file a group request at itsmypark.org instead of just arriving.
  • The landing page filters by borough, neighborhood, accessibility, and date, and the site lists 46 events for the fall season.

Saturday, Sept. 26 is the peak day — the most sites in one morning this fall, and Brookville Park is the one with the most going on: benches painted, a new Little Free Library cut open, and an author on site. If you only do one, pick the park you actually walk through, because the whole point of the program is that the people who maintain a park are the people who use it. Van Cortlandt’s Thursday trail crew is the repeatable option for anyone who wants a standing appointment rather than a one-off.
