Every New Yorker has an opinion about pigeons and almost nobody has a reason to think about them for six straight hours. Pigeon Palooza is the reason. It runs Sunday afternoon at Leroy’s Place in Park Slope, and it is entirely free.

What’s actually happening
- Pigeon-themed art, on view and for sale, from a dozen named artists and studios.
- A pigeon puppet show, pigeon children’s book readings, and a pigeon-themed rock band (called, correctly, Pigeon Rock Band).
- The rest of the lineup: Caryn Cast, Mother Pigeon’s Revival, This Side Up Studios, Chris Dane, Sarah Noda, Lori With A Story, Vigilante Vegan, Tinebird, SKOOTY, Made by Ellie Bklyn, Pete Zaparty.
- The whole thing is hosted in collaboration with Mother Pigeon and Caryn Cast — two of the city’s actual pigeon-as-subject artists, not a branding exercise.
The charm here is that it is small and specific. A free block party about one bird, run by the people who already make work about that bird, in a storefront that put a schedule graphic on the internet and left it at that. Nothing about it requires planning beyond showing up between 1 and 6 on Sunday.
If you have ever defended a pigeon to someone who called it a rat with wings, this is your afternoon. If you want pigeon art for a wall, this is also your afternoon, and it is the rare art event where the artists will be standing right there.
