Most free park programming in New York runs June through August and then disappears. Forest Fitness at Fort Tryon Park does not — it is a free, year-round exercise class that has been meeting on the park’s staircases and woodland paths every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday morning, and it is genuinely a workout rather than a stretch circle.

  • When: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:30–8:30 a.m. (the program also runs Saturday sessions); year-round
  • Where: meet at Margaret Corbin Circle, Fort Tryon Park — the Heather Garden entrance, up the hill from the A train at 190th Street
  • Cost: free; RSVP through Eventbrite on the NYC Parks listing
  • What it actually is: brisk walking, multiple staircases, stretches and strengthening, notable tree identification, and forest bathing
  • Who leads it: instructor Nancy Bruning, BA, MPH, PAPHS. All fitness levels are accommodated, but every class involves brisk walking and stairs because of the park’s layout
  • Know before you go: class is cancelled if it is raining or if the actual temperature or wind chill is below 20°F
  • Saturday bonus: the Saturday class finishes at Anne Loftus Playground and offers an optional group walk to the Greenmarket on Isham Street
  • Contact: programs@forttryonpark.org or 212-795-1388

Fort Tryon is one of the hilliest parks in Manhattan, which is exactly why this works: the terrain supplies the intensity, the instructor supplies the structure, and the tree identification and forest bathing turn a workout into an hour outside instead of an hour on a machine. Free, structured, outdoors, and available in January.

If you have been meaning to restart something physical, a 7:30 a.m. class that costs nothing and meets in a park you would otherwise only visit for the Cloisters is a low-stakes way to start. Bring water; dress for the weather, not the calendar.
