University Settlement is turning 140 and throwing a free six-hour block party in the P.S. 133 schoolyard. This is not just a cake-and-speeches anniversary: the lineup covers music, games, art, and enough free food to make it a real Saturday plan.

The basics

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 3, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Where: P.S. 133 William A. Butler School, 610 Baltic Street, Brooklyn
  • Cost: Free
  • Who: All ages

What is happening

  • A kickball tournament and carnival games
  • Face painting and indoor art-making
  • Dance and music performances
  • A DJ dance party with ’90s hip-hop, doo-wop, and Motown
  • A community art project and neighborhood resources
  • Free Jamaican patties, popcorn, and ice cream

The schoolyard matters here: University Settlement launched its first Brooklyn program at P.S. 133 more than 20 years ago. The organization itself dates to 1886 and calls itself America’s first settlement house.

Six hours gives this the rare useful kind of flexibility — arrive for lunch, stay for the DJ, or use it as a low-stakes stop between other Saturday plans. There is no admission price to negotiate and no narrow performance window to miss.
