Want to paddle under the Manhattan skyline for free? Brooklyn Bridge Park’s free public kayaking program runs through Aug. 30 in the protected embayment off Pier 2, with sessions Wednesday and Thursday evenings (5–7 p.m.), Saturdays (10 a.m.–3 p.m.), and Sunday afternoons (noon–2:30 p.m.). Bank of America’s Museums on Us program quietly unlocks free general admission to nine major NYC cultural institutions on the first full weekend of every month — and for eligible cardholders (any Bank of America, Merrill, or Bank of America Private Bank credit or debit card plus a photo ID), the next window is September 5–6. The roster includes the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Met Cloisters, the New York Botanical Garden, the Intrepid Museum, Cooper Hewitt, the Jewish Museum (Sundays only), the Staten Island Children’s Museum, and the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers. The catch: admission is free for the cardholder only — friends and family still pay their own way. Right now MoMA is a particularly good pick, with its sprawling “Marcel Duchamp” retrospective — nearly 300 works spanning the artist’s career — on view through August 22, a show that’s otherwise $30 at the door. Tucked into a residential block of Carroll Gardens, just past the BQE on Union Street, is what may be Brooklyn’s smallest — and strangest — art museum: the Salvator Mundi Museum of Art, a 45-square-foot exhibition built into sculptor Elliott Arkin’s front-door lobby. It’s open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and you don’t even need to step inside — the entire show is visible from the street through a panel in the door. The current exhibit is devoted to orbs, inspired by the crystal sphere in Leonardo’s Salvator Mundi, the badly damaged 16th-century painting that resurfaced at a New Orleans estate sale in 2005 and became the most expensive artwork ever sold at public auction in 2017. Arkin trademarked the phrase and turned the museum into a running joke about art, value, and ownership: past shows include “Salvator Barbie,” a tribute to the painting’s restorer, and a Halloween exhibit about the beetles that ate Renaissance paintings. If Arkin is home and free, he’ll often come down, open the museum further, and hand out free merch — including a pasta sauce declaring “The world’s most expensive work of art is now a great pasta sauce.” Ring the bell, or just stand on the sidewalk: you’re already inside the museum. ...

Flaco — the Eurasian eagle-owl who escaped the Central Park Zoo in 2023 and became an unlikely symbol of self-reliance before dying a year later from rat poison and pigeon herpes — is now the subject of a feature documentary, and it’s screening in New York this week. “Wild Inside,” directed by Penny Lane, had its free world premiere in Central Park on July 29 and is now playing at Manhattan’s IFC Center, with showings around the country timed to International Owl Awareness Day on Aug. 4. Lane says the film captures Flaco’s full year on the lam and digs into the questions his story opened up: what happened before he arrived in New York, his family tree, the ethics of zoos, and the natural history of Eurasian eagle-owls generally. Flaco’s afterlife has already included books, a museum exhibition, flash tattoos, and endless merch — now there’s a feature film to add to the pile. Catch it at IFC Center while it’s in town. ...

The streets of Manhattan are going car-free again this August. NYC Summer Streets opens more than 20 miles of roads — the full length of the island, from the Brooklyn Bridge up to Inwood — to pedestrians, runners, and cyclists, with outdoor fitness classes, family activities, art installations, and live music along the route. This is the second year the program has spanned all of Manhattan, and DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn expects crowds in line with last year’s ~500,000 attendees. It’s free and registration-free: just show up on foot, by bike, or on skates. Summer Streets continues in Manhattan on the next two Saturdays, Aug. 8 and Aug. 15, before moving to Brooklyn and the Bronx — Queens and Staten Island already had their weekends. Expect art booths, brass bands, and plenty of people treating the FDR-adjacent stretch as a morning running track. The NYC Parks Department has opened the lottery portal for the Urban Park Rangers’ Family Camping program — free overnight camping in city parks, where camping is normally prohibited. A new lottery opens every Monday and runs four days, each about 10 days before its outing; the season runs through Sept. 18, with the final trips at the Blue Heron Nature Center on Staten Island and at Rockaway Beach.
