The streets of Manhattan are going car-free again this August. NYC Summer Streets opens more than 20 miles of roads — the full length of the island, from the Brooklyn Bridge up to Inwood — to pedestrians, runners, and cyclists, with outdoor fitness classes, family activities, art installations, and live music along the route. This is the second year the program has spanned all of Manhattan, and DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn expects crowds in line with last year’s ~500,000 attendees. It’s free and registration-free: just show up on foot, by bike, or on skates. Summer Streets continues in Manhattan on the next two Saturdays, Aug. 8 and Aug. 15, before moving to Brooklyn and the Bronx — Queens and Staten Island already had their weekends. Expect art booths, brass bands, and plenty of people treating the FDR-adjacent stretch as a morning running track. Bring water, sunscreen, and a willingness to dance if the Honk Family Band rolls through.
