Eight giant glowing seesaws have taken over Herald Square, turning one of Midtown’s busiest crossroads into a free interactive playground through Aug. 21. The installation, called Impulse, was created by Montreal-based designers Lateral Office and CS Design, and each oversized ride activates its own burst of music and vibrant lighting — a childhood favorite blown up to city scale. It runs daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Herald Square (Broadway between 35th and 36th streets), and it’s completely free on a first-come, first-served basis: no tickets, no reservations, just walk up and play. A free Brooklyn show that reframes a tired stereotype is up through September 5: “Unboxed: Black Fathers Art Present,” an exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist Dáreece J. Walker at Gallery Particulier (281 Maple Street), open daily 6:00–8:00 p.m. Walker paints tender figurative works on cardboard — a material freighted with associations of masculinity and labor — showing Black fathers with their children in moments of care, protection, play, and simple presence. New York City families still have time to claim two summer food benefits before school starts. The federally funded summer EBT program pays low-income families $120 per school-age child to cover groceries while school cafeterias are closed — families already on SNAP or Medicaid are automatically eligible and the money lands on their EBT cards, while everyone else below the income threshold can apply until Sept. 8. One catch: benefits expire 122 days after they’re loaded, so advocates say to spend them before they lapse. Separately, the NYC Department of Education’s summer meal program serves free breakfast and lunch to every child under 18 at schools, parks, pools, and libraries across the city — seven days a week, no application, no ID required, running through Sept. 4.
