Gothamist’s Hank Shteamer rounds up eight notable bills kicking off New York’s fall concert season this month — a mix of open-air gigs while the weather holds, plus club, church, and theater bookings through late September. Queens shows up three times: Forest Hills Stadium, Club Amazura, and Knockdown Center all land on the list.

  • ear + NEW YORK + Bby Kell — East 34th St. Heliport, Sept. 12: buzzy indie-pop duo ear (of “Rumspringa”) with the deadpan electropop of NEW YORK and Atlanta rapper Bby Kell opening, East River views included.
  • Immolation + Ancient Death — Saint Vitus (Bushwick), Sept. 13: Yonkers death-metal legends play the newly reopened club’s comeback slate, which is mostly sold out — but this second-night date still has tickets.
  • Grouper — The Town Hall, Sept. 15 & 16: Liz Harris’s rare solo shows, all sonic haze and fragile beauty; she tours infrequently.
  • Erykah Badu + De La Soul + The Alchemist — Forest Hills Stadium, Sept. 18: Badu’s first album in 15-plus years, “Before the World Blows,” with producer The Alchemist, plus De La Soul on the bill.
  • Jada Kingdom + Byron Messia + Trinidad Killa — Club Amazura, Sept. 25: a Queens dancehall night spanning Jada Kingdom’s vulnerable songwriting, Byron Messia’s “Talibans” breakout, and Trinidad Killa’s zess.
  • Mezame New York — three churches, Sept. 25–27: Ambient Church’s three-day festival of experimental sound in real sanctuaries — Charlemagne Palestine, Laraaji, Carl Stone, James Ferraro, Juliana Huxtable — plus choral works by Hildegard of Bingen.
  • Outline: Flying Lotus + EYE + Olof Dreijer + Black Dice + more — Knockdown Center, Sept. 26: Flying Lotus headlines a one-day experimental-and-club bill at the cavernous Queens venue.
  • L’Rain — Night Club 101, Sept. 28 & 29: Taja Cheek’s shape-shifting, acclaimed “fata morgana_” gets two immersive nights.

Tickets are through the venues, and the early Saint Vitus reunion shows already sold out — so grab seats for anything you want. September is when New York’s live calendar tips from summer festivals into full fall concert season.
