The last weekend of August is open-house season in NYC — free programs and celebrations timed to back-to-school. The AMNY events calendar has a strong one for Aug 29–30: canoeing on the Hudson, a circus-style movement lab in Brooklyn, an art biennial open house in the Bronx, and community celebrations in Queens and Washington Heights. Everything below is free and walk-up.
- Inwood Canoe Club Open House — Sun Aug 30, 9 a.m.–noon, Inwood (Manhattan): free paddling on the Hudson with club boats and volunteers, ages 9 and up
- Streb Open House — Sat Aug 29, 10 a.m.–noon, STREB Lab for Action Mechanics, Williamsburg: try the company’s daredevil movement work — tumbling, rigging, air — with the pros, ages 3 and up
- 7th AIM Biennial Culminating Open House — Sat Aug 29, 1–5 p.m., 1040 Grand Concourse, Bronx: final open house of the AIM artist program, all ages
- Idlewild Back to School Open House — Sat Aug 29, 2–5 p.m., Idlewild Environmental Center, Springfield Gardens (Queens): nature-center open house at the city’s southeastern green edge
- Back to School Community Cleanup & Celebration — Sun Aug 30, 1–4 p.m., Fulton Park, Brooklyn: volunteer cleanup plus a family celebration, ages 9 and up
- Youth Basketball Clinics — Sat Aug 29, 9–11 a.m., Brooklyn Bridge Park: free hoops clinic, ages 5 and up
- A Whole New School Year — Back-to-School Drive & Family Resource Day — Sat Aug 29, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., Church of the Intercession, Washington Heights: free family resource day with school supplies
- The Secret Theatre’s Open House — Sat Aug 29, 11 a.m.–4 p.m., Long Island City: theatre open house and community hang
Pick one neighborhood or make a day of it — the canoe club alone is worth the trip north. Most of these need no RSVP: show up and take the last free weekend of summer.
