Gothamist has assembled the definitive guide to NYC’s free summer cultural programming, and most of it is still running. Music is anchored by the two grandaddies of no-cover summer: BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!, in its 47th season with 15 free shows at the Prospect Park bandshell through Sept. 19 (Sheila E., Wayne Wonder, Common), and Summer Stage, which brings 60+ free shows to 13 parks through early October. Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City wraps Aug. 8, but the movie season rolls on: Bryant Park’s lawn screenings run Mondays through Sept. 14, the Intrepid hosts free films on its flight deck, Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Movies With a View returns for its 26th season, and Roosevelt Island’s Southpoint Park shows audience-voted picks like “Wicked: For Good” and “Superman.” Shakespeare in the Park’s “The Winter’s Tale” plays the Delacorte through Aug. 23 (free day-of tickets to early lineups), Playbill and Rockefeller Center’s “Road to Broadway” serves up excerpts of “The Book of Mormon,” “Hadestown,” and “Wicked,” and Brooklyn’s Molière In The Park stages “Don Juan” at the LeFrak Center Sept. 5–27. Add Times Square Zumba, Hudson Yards pickleball lessons, Bella Abzug Park’s Tuesday-night films, and the 7,000+ free events NYC Parks lists through October, and the only real cost this summer is your MetroCard.
