Through Sept. 7, Sotheby’s Breuer Building on Madison Avenue is hosting “Botero in New York,” a free exhibition in partnership with the Fernando Botero Foundation that gathers 25 paintings and sculptures from the artist’s foundational New York period (1960–1973) — many drawn directly from the Botero family and other private collections, and never before shown publicly in the city. The show traces how Botero developed Boterismo while immersed in New York’s creative circles: pushing back against the abstraction that dominated the era, he evolved from expressive brushwork toward the monumental, humorous, deeply human figures the world now recognizes. It’s one of the first single-artist exhibitions at the Breuer since Sotheby’s took over Marcel Breuer’s landmark building, presented at the height of its Summer Season. Open daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m. at 945 Madison Avenue; admission is free, and the works are only on view through Labor Day weekend.
