The Balloon Museum — the global phenomenon in inflatable, interactive art — just opened its first permanent U.S. flagship in New York City. “DAYDREAM – Air Becomes Art” launched August 7 at the historic Tin Building in the South Street Seaport (96 South St), taking over the space formerly occupied by the Jean-Georges food hall that closed earlier this year after losing more than $100 million. The exhibition features works by an impressive roster of international artists including Marina Abramović (whose Snowy / Windy / Spring on the Planet Z invites visitors into a constructed weather world), Martin Creed (Work No. 3966: Half The Air In A Given Space), Cyril Lancelin, and Karina Smigla-Bobinski, among others. Each installation encourages physical interaction — you walk through, touch, and become part of the art. The 60-90 minute experience is open daily, with tickets starting at $40 for adults and $26 for children (family packs available). The Tin Building itself, a landmarked structure at Pier 17 with views of the Brooklyn Bridge and East River, has been repositioned by Seaport Entertainment Group as a destination for the international arts scene — making this as much a place to visit as an exhibition to see.
