BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! is dedicating an entire afternoon to Aaliyah today, Saturday August 8, with “Aaliyah: One in a Million” at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park — completely free, doors at 3pm. Brooklyn’s own Taja Cheek (L’Rain) serves as music director, leading a live band through Aaliyah’s catalog with performances from Res, serpentwithfeet, Halima, and Motherboard, plus DJ sets from Nyla Symone, Honey Bun, and albertoreyes. Rolling Stone/Vogue journalist Brittany Spanos hosts. But this goes beyond music: Video Music Box creator Ralph McDaniels shares a personal testimonial, original short films commissioned for the event screen throughout the afternoon, and designer Karl Kani — whose motorcycle jackets became synonymous with Aaliyah’s ’90s style — hosts a pop-up boutique raffling three of those iconic jackets plus 20 T-shirts. Twenty-five years after her death, Brooklyn is showing up for one of its own, and all you have to do is show up to Prospect Park.
