The NBA is giving prediction markets access to its branding and fans while negotiating controls on the bets they offer. Tom Nightingale reports that the league named Kalshi and Polymarket its preferred prediction-market exchanges on October 26. It also expanded its DraftKings agreement to cover prediction markets and nationwide promotion, alongside an information-sharing agreement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the federal derivatives regulator.
The commercial rights are concrete. Kalshi and Polymarket can use league and team names and logos, receive promotional opportunities across U.S. media channels, and obtain official NBA data through Sportradar. That data helps determine how contracts settle. Event contracts are bets on whether something happens, sold as financial products. The partnerships give those products the league’s endorsement as well as its official record.
The NBA says the agreements restrict permissible markets, prohibit league and team personnel from trading NBA contracts, and require cooperation over suspicious trading. A league spokesperson told Nightingale that its recent sportsbook restrictions will also apply to prediction-market partners. Those include limits on combining bets that a player will fall below statistical targets, and on other markets vulnerable to manipulation or athlete harassment.
These controls address real risks to players and competition. Their effectiveness depends on which markets are restricted and how suspicious activity is detected and acted on. The separate federal agreement establishes communication and information sharing; the announcement supplies no evidence yet that the combined arrangements reduce harassment, manipulation or gambling losses.
The marketing expansion reaches beyond the states where DraftKings can offer its state-regulated sportsbook. Nightingale describes its advertising in California, Texas and Florida, where its app can instead offer sports event contracts depending on location. League promotion gives that distribution strategy another route to customers. Fans bear the financial risk of their wagers, while players remain exposed to the behavior the market restrictions are intended to curb.
SBC Americas is an industry trade publication. Its reporting documents the rights and restrictions, which the NBA’s official announcement corroborates. The league is expanding gambling promotion and attempting to contain its consequences in the same set of agreements.
